Budapest basic...

For those who doesn't know it yet, Budapest is the capital city of Hungary.

According to the data of the National Census 2001 the number of inhabitants of Budapest is officially 1,777,921.

The population of Hungary according to the same census instead is 10,198,315.

We can say that more or less 20% of the Hungarian population lives in the capital city. This sound somewhat strange, but we have take into consideration that this capital city belonged to a much bigger country before World War I. (After World War I. Hungary lost approximately 70% of its territory and 60% of its population with signing the so-called Trianon-treaty, June 4, 1920)

Budapest as one city exists only since 1873, when 3 former cities (Pest, Buda, Old-Buda) united. The city is 525 km2, it has 23 districts. There are 3 islands (Óbuda Island, Margaret Island, Csepel Island) and 9 bridges: 2 for railways, 7 for normal traffic.

Budapest is located on the banks of the river Danube. It is often called “The Pearl of the Danube” or “The Queen of the Danube”. The hilly part is the Buda side, while Pest is completely flat. The territory of Pest is twice as big as that of Buda, and the population of Pest is twice as much as Buda. The highest hill in Budapest is the János-Hill with its 529 meters.
