 St. Anne Church

The St. Anne Church is one of the most beautiful baroque buildings of Budapest. The construction of the church started in 1740, according to the plans of Kristóf Hamon, and was completed by Mátyás Nepauer in 1761.

In the next 200 years the church suffered from wars, floods earthquakes, even it was planned to be demolished, owing to the construction of the metro network. Fortunately this plan was not realised, and the church was reconstructed between 1970-1984.

Address: Batthyány tér 7. Budapest 1011

The history of the organ of St. Anne church of Buda

St Anne ChurchThe organ-case standing on the choir originally stood in the former Buda Castle Carmelite church (now Castle Theatre). It was bought by the Buda Council for the St. Anne Church in 1785. An invoice by painter Ferenc Thaller from 1807 is the first source that informs us about the positive-case standing on the balustrade.

In the early 20th century, it was already Angster’s organ that stood in the two-part case; it was later reconstructed. During the WW II the choir was hit by a bomb, and also the organ suffered damages.

In 1979, architect Tamás Tóth designed the reconstruction of the large case, which together with the positive-case serve as the frame of the new Jemlich organ. Both cases are made of larch-wood, with coat of tempera paint. Now the original coat of paint can be seen. The reconstruction was carried out between 1980 and 1982. The three manual and 37-register organ was constructed by the Dresden Jemlich Company, according to the plans of organists Ferenc Gergely and József Kárpáti. The organ was consecrated in 1985, and is known today as one of best organs in Hungary.
